Highcliffe Sailing Club

Perched on Mudeford Quay with the clubhouse Sea Vixen looking west across Christchurch Harbour, Highcliffe Sailing Club makes the most of its position. On clearer days the view stretches to Christchurch Priory, Hengistbury Head and over to the Isle of Wight.

The shallow harbour keeps things safe for learners and younger sailors, yet the club sits minutes from open-water sailing in Christchurch Bay.

The club came together in 1962 when the De Havilland sports sailing section joined forces with the Highcliffe Community Association group. Early members converted a motor torpedo boat into temporary headquarters before raising funds for a permanent building.

That new clubhouse opened in 1971, followed by a licensed bar a year later. Britt Hand, a founder member, steered much of the progress – from buying the first rescue boat for sea racing to launching junior training that produced national champions.

Dinghies remain the heartbeat here. Members race or cruise the harbour most weekends, with series running spring through autumn and frostbite events in winter. Bay racing adds extra bite when conditions allow.

Training stays relaxed rather than regimented; RYA courses cover beginners to race coaching, and the youth squad, HSC Seals, runs Saturday mornings plus holiday camps.

Paddlers have their own corner too. The Paddlers group heads out midweek, Ladies That Launch meets Thursday evenings, and Blokes in Boats takes over Saturday mornings. Kayak racks and paddleboard storage fill quickly, though spaces open for new members. Windsurfers and kitesurfers launch from the same slip when the breeze picks up.

Changing rooms come with hot showers, the galley turns out simple meals on race days, and the bar stays open late after evening events. A new upper deck and sunset terrace give extra room for post-sail drinks.

Social side never slacks. Summer means barbecues on the quay, live bands, curry nights and quizzes through winter. Family fun days and youth events keep everyone involved.

Membership covers families, single adults over 25 and youths 16-25. Dinghy park spaces are limited but boat hire is available, and members pick up discounts at local chandlers. Email the office to start the process.

The club rates highly with a large number of reviews praising the friendly, informal atmosphere, well-run racing and supportive training setup. Visitors to open events often mention how quickly they feel part of things, and long-standing members highlight the balance between serious sailing and relaxed social evenings.
