Bradley Green Steps Back from The Lord Bute

Highcliffe locals might notice a change at The Lord Bute, the charming hotel and restaurant tucked away in this coastal spot. Bradley Green, the driving force behind its success, has confirmed he’s stepping away from daily operations. It’s a move that comes after a tough period marked by uncertainty over the site’s future.

For those not in the know, The Lord Bute has been a standout in Dorset’s dining scene under Green’s watch. He turned it into a place where fine food meets cosy vibes, earning two AA Rosettes and a five-star rating for guest accommodation. It’s even been hailed as one of the county’s top spots for upscale meals. Green, son of rock guitarist Mick Green, brought his flair from other ventures like Redbone Restaurants to make it shine.

But behind the scenes, things got tricky. The landlord pushed plans to redevelop the historic building, sparking a lengthy battle with BCP Council.

The council turned down the application, which Green welcomed, but the threat of appeals or a sale loomed large. With only a short lease on offer, the stress built up.

“When planning permission was refused we were obviously over the moon, but it became quickly clear that this was unlikely to be the end,” Green said. “Another appeal or another planning fight could easily mean another two years of uncertainty. I simply do not have it in me to go through that again. It took everything out of me.”

He described the decision as emotional but needed, allowing him to shift focus to other projects. “I will miss The Lord Bute enormously,” he added. “I hope they continue to resist change and planning pressure, but in my bones I feel the site will eventually be developed. I could not put any more of my heart into something with that level of uncertainty.”

This follows the exit of long-time collaborator Christopher Denley. Now, head chef Daniel Shelley takes the helm. A spokesperson for the venue expressed optimism: “Under Daniel’s leadership the restaurant has moved confidently into its next phase. We hope to continue welcoming guests for many years to come and remain hopeful that a long lease will be secured as negotiations continue.”

Shelley himself is buzzing about the role. “Taking the reins at The Lord Bute has been incredibly exciting,” he shared. “My focus has been on respecting that legacy while continuing to push the food forward. The standards remain exactly where they should be, and my aim is to ensure guests experience the same quality, consistency, and care every time they walk through the door.”

For regulars, it’s business as usual with Shelley at the stove. Green’s departure marks the end of an era, but his influence lingers in every dish. Highcliffe’s food lovers will watch closely as The Lord Bute navigates what comes next, hopeful the spot keeps its spot in the local heart.
